Jessica Beagley may appeal sentence for child abuse

11:08 31/08/2011

MOSCOW, August 31 - RAPSI. Jessica Beagleys defense attorney, William Ingaldson, is dissatisfied with the sentence Beagley received for abusing her adopted Russian-born son, while Beagley herself is considering filing an appeal against it, Ingaldson said.

"We are disappointed with the verdict and believe it was based on an improper definition of the term "cruelly punish." We also believe the ordinance under which Jessica was charged is unconstitutionally vague. In addition, we believe the court made incorrect evidentiary rulings. Jessica is considering whether to appeal the judgment," the attorney said.

The Anchorage, Alaska court sentenced Jessica Beagley on Tuesday to six months of probation and a fine of $2,500, after a jury convicted her of abusing her adopted Russian-born son.

Russias Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Pavel Astakhov has urged American authorities to maintain permanent supervision over the family of Jessica Beagley.
