Court dismisses Chanel's claim over legal protection of Egoiste trademark

17:24 30/09/2011

MOSCOW, September 30 - RAPSI. The court dismissed Chanel's claim to cancel the intellectual property service's (Rospatent) decision to cease protecting the Egoiste trademark, the Russian Legal Information Agency reported.

Chanel, a renowned French fashion house, said it was not duly informed about the Chamber for Patent Disputes' meeting in 2004 when it decided to cease the trademark's legal protection.

Rospatent's lawyer explained that the service keeps acknowledgments about the receipt of meeting notifications for only five years. He also said the trademark is registered for all classes of the international classification of goods and services, but Rospatent has no evidence of whether it is used or not.

Meanwhile, Chanel's lawyer said although Egoiste is a multi-billion dollar trademark and widely used worldwide, Chanel's claim relates to only not having received due notification about the meeting.

Chanel produces perfume under the Chanel Egoiste trademark.
