Doctors find no reasons to treat Tymoshenko out of jail

14:20 09/12/2011

KIEV, December 9 - RAPSI. A medical commission has examined former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and found no reasons to release her from jail for medical treatment, Ukraine's penitentiary service reported on Friday.

The state penitentiary service reported that a special medical commission composing Ukraine's most prominent doctors examined Tymoshenko.

The commission studied on Thursday all the medical documents available on Tymoshenko to examine her health. Tymoshenko refused to undergo a personal medical examination.

Tymoshenko was arrested in early August in connection with the "gas case." Her health has become significantly worse during confinement. A Kiev district court placed Tymoshenko under arrest on Thursday as part of a criminal case dealing with her activity at the United Energy Systems of Ukraine. Tymoshenko has been charged with attempted embezzlement of $405.5 million in public funds, organizing a non-disclosure of foreign currency proceeds amounting to more than $165 million, and tax evasion in the amount of over $5.8 million. The court conducted an on-site session at the pretrial detention center as Tymoshenko can not walk and stays in bed due to her poor health.

Tymoshenko's defense said on Thursday that her health has gotten worse.

The Kiev Appeals Court will start considering on December 13 Tymoshenko's appeal against the October 11 judgment sentencing her to seven years in prison for abuse of power in signing gas contracts between Ukraine's Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom in 2009. The defense seeks for her release on grounds of poor health.
