16:12 12/08/2015

MOSCOW, August 12 (RAPSI) – Riga’s Vidzeme Court upheld on Wednesday the detention of Russian citizen Andrei Popko, suspected of espionage, RIA Novosti reports quoting the court’s press service.

Popko and Alexander Kurkin, both members of The Other Russia party, allegedly intruded on Adazi Military Base, according to the statement.

The court, whose decision cannot be appealed, is currently choosing a measure of pretrial detention for Popko.

Earlier, the Latvian security police said it had opened a case against two Russian citizens who allegedly illegally entered the Adazi Military Base on June 10.

On Friday, the Vidzeme Court issued an arrest warrant for Popko and Kurkin, who are suspected of espionage and attempted terrorism.

Latvian criminal legislation stipulates lifetime imprisonment as the maximum penalty for these crimes.
