Russian pensioner receives suspended sentence for repost on social media

11:50 14/10/2016

MOSCOW, October 14 (RAPSI, Lyudmila Klenko) – A court in the Chuvash Republic found the local pensioner Nikolai Egorov guilty of incitement of national hatred by repost of a publication on VKontakte social network and gave him a two-year suspended sentence, his attorney Yevgeny Gubin told RAPSI on Friday.

According to the lawyer, the sentence will be appealed.

Prosecution asked the court to sentence Egorov to 360 hours of compulsory community service. The defendant pleaded not guilty.

According to investigators, on May 8, 2014, Egorov posted an open letter of publicist Boris Stomakhin, which was earlier declared extremist, on his VKontakte page.

Egorov insisted that he had not put any publications online and that many people had access to his account because of his half knowledge of Internet specifics, Gubin said earlier.
