Russian research scientist charged with treason denied house arrest

14:59 02/08/2018

MOSCOW, August 2 (RAPSI, Kirill Ryabchikov) – The Moscow City Court on Thursday refused to place detained scientist of the Central Research Institute for Engineering Technology (TsNIImash) Viktor Kudryavtsev charged with treason under house arrest, RAPSI reports from the courtroom.

Earlier, the Lefortovsky District Court put Kudryavtsev in detention until September 19. In his appeal filed with the Moscow City Court the defendant sought to overturn the ruling and asked for house arrest. However, the appeal was dismissed.

The hearing was held behind closed doors.

Kudryavtsev stands charged with disclosure of classified information to the Belgian Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamic, his attorney Yevgeny Smirnov told RAPSI. Investigators claim that the researcher has transferred information via email from an unmarked computer. However, the scientist has not worked with such secret documents since late 90s, according to the lawyer.

The 74-year old researcher pleaded not guilty and refused to testify in the case, Smirnov added.
