Russian human rights body calls OSCE to cooperation in journalists protection abroad

MOSCOW, June 25 (RAPSI) – The Presidential Council for Human Rights of Russia has called the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to put heads together to protect Russian journalists working abroad in relation to an attack in Georgia, the advisory body’s press service reports.

According to the statement, on June 22, unknown persons attacked the film crew of Russia 24 TV channel in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and attempted to beat a reported and a cameraman. This is not the first event when foreign journalists are attacked amid current turmoil in the country, the human rights council states.

As the council’s chair Mikhail Fedotov says in his application addressed to the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir, the Russian advisory body favors that the international organization has already condemned the violence against journalists during the riots and has called Georgian authorities to immediately investigate the incidents and bring the guilty to responsibility.

However, Fedotov believes it necessary to unite in an attempt to provide the security of Russian journalists abroad. He also expressed willingness to the cooperation in the surveillance over investigation into incidents led to violation of Russian journalists’ rights in Georgia and other countries.
